Solar’s prospects push DuPont to EVA and polyvinyl fluoride startups

DuPont has started ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) production at its Chinese joint venture Beijing Hua Mei Polymer Company Limited, with plans to market the EVA produced there under the Elvax brand. DuPont says the joint venture will supply a broad range of specialty EVAs targeting market segments like packaging, adhesives, wire and cable, footwear, renewable energy, and electronics.

In the April issue of MPW, our Notable Processors feature included a profile of Leon Farahnik, noting "he started a new company that eventually grew into Hilex-Poly, the world's largest processor of plastic shopping bags, leading the transition from paper to plastic bags at the country's grocery stores." ABS film and sheet products for solar, automotive and printing markets

A new acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) film is being promoted for use as a backing material in alternative energy solar cells or as a sheet for luxury car interiors. The products also enables multilayer printing to show uneven surfaces, mainly for building-related materials. Techno Polymer Co. Ltd.'s (Tokyo) ValueTech line has been launched as a new business.
Dow sees bright future for polyolefin-based encapsulant, targets EVA

Dow Chemical Co. (Midland, MI) is launching a line of polyolefin-based encapsulant films for photovoltaic (PV) modules, after adding a new production line at its Findlay, OH manufacturing plant for the new product in response to growing demand for PV specialty films.

Label converters offered new ‘Lyte’ options

Using two of the industry's largest trade shows as launch pads, the films processing business unit of plastics and chemicals supplier ExxonMobil Chemical next month will introduce two new oriented polypropylene (OPP) film grades for pressure-sensitive label applications. Marketed under the Label-Lyte moniker, the labels are designed to comply with EU directives limiting the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOC) during manufacture.
